Bus shelters today

You can discover what bus shelters are like today by going to look at one with your school or family. You could use a camera or sketch pad and pencil to record what you find.

Bus shelter

  • Materials used and why you think they were chosen by the designer or maker
  • Construction method is it welded, bolted or set in concrete?
  • Can you put a name to the different parts is there a ‘framework’, a ‘canopy’ or ‘roof’?
  • Who will use the shelter?
  • If you look at several different styles of shelter decide which one is the best / strongest / most attractive and why you think that.

Try making a drawing that shows all the different parts of a bus shelter, almost like an ‘exploded drawing’. This will help you look at the framework, the covering material and the way that information is presented to the passengers.

Make a list of all the functions bus shelters need to meet.
